This feature-length documentary gives a vivid, eye-opening, and personal introduction to one of the most important, yet perpetually marginalised realms of filmmaking: avant-garde cinema.

A must see for expert cinema fans and the simply curious, this documentary takes its title from Len Lye’s masterpiece film, Free Radicals (1958) and serves up a compelling and personal history of experimental cinema by director Pip Chodorov. It also returns a favour, providing the subtitle to our own exhibition here: Free Radicals: Cinema on the Wrong Side of the Tracks  (12 May - 22 Jul 2018).

What is experimental film, and why is it called that? Artists and poets working in celluloid since before WWI have always been free radicals, crazy about filmmaking and pushing the art form in radical new directions. Trapped in a no man's land, excluded from both the art world and the film industry, they boldly created a grassroots network for making and showing their films in a spirit of friendship and solidarity. They also created a profound body of work that continues to influence our culture.

Free Radicals has rare interviews with some of the most important filmmakers in the avant-garde tradition (including Len Lye, Jonas Mekas, Peter Kubelka, Stan Brakhage and Hans Richter), and includes several films in their entirety. The film's sincere admiration for its subject is best reflected by Chodorov's own description: "I wanted to share a few of the films I love and introduce you to some of the free, radical artists who made them".
