With 'scratch' film, kinetic sculpture and items from the artist’s archive, Experimental Moves revisits the pivotal years when Lye shifted his focus from one medium to the other.
Len Lye: Experimental Moves focuses on the connection between the artist’s pioneering film work and kinetic sculpture of the 1950s and 60s. Lye’s career went through a number of transformations during these years, perhaps none of greater importance than his mid-career shift from experimental cinema to kinetic sculpture. It proved to be an intensely productive period, and within ten years Lye was a leading figure in the Kinetic Art movement.
Experimental Moves examines this shift in focus with a look at these two major bodies of work. The exhibition presents key kinetic sculptures and film, as well as documentary footage, newspaper articles, notes and drawings from the Len Lye Foundation Archive. Much of this material is presented here for the first time, providing an insight into Lye’s philosophy and vision for his kinetic sculptures.
Experimental Moves celebrates the exploratory, experiential dimension of Lye’s practice, and his innovative work with new materials, methods and technologies. The basis of all Lye’s work, whether sculpture or film, painting or drawing, was his dedication to an art of movement.
