The Gallery recognises the rights and responsibilities confirmed in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 


Our partnership relationship with iwi Māori is Ariki ki te Ariki - Leader to Leader - based on the following values:

- Ngā Ūara: Principles

- Tika me te Pono: We endeavor to act with integrity and honesty

- Whanaungatanga: We maintain internal, tribal, and community relationships.

- Kotahitanga me te Mahitahi: We are unified in true partnership and look to collaborate and co-design.

- Manaakitanga: We care for each other and our place.


Whiringa Toi is a partnership platform for iwi and Māori artists to participate in shaping the priorities, procedures, and cultural activities of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre. The group comprises representation of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki and Māori artists living in Taranaki along with the Director of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, a member of the New Plymouth District Council Iwi Liaison Team and others as required. 

The group currently includes Wharehoka Wano (Chair), Aroha Chamberlain, WharehokaSmith, and Morgana Watson.
