Family Art with Fox: Adventures with a Pencil

Join Fox and Govett-Brewster Educator Rebecca for some super fun drawing games at home!

Let’s use our senses to have Adventures with a Pencil.

Watch the video below and follow along with your whānau.

Drawing Texture

What’s inside the Bag?

Without looking, can you guess what’s hidden inside a bag of secret objects, using your sense of touch, to listen, and even smell?

Then, have a go at drawing how they feel, or even what you think they are!

You will need:

A buddy

Pencil and paper

Two small bags

Secret objects interesting to touch – fluffy, rough, slinky, spiky...

Touch

Step 1

Find some items with interesting textures, hide them from each other inside a bag.

Don’t peek!

Put your hand inside your buddy’s bag and close your eyes.

Step 2

Describe aloud how the objects feel.

Draw marks on your paper to show what your fingers can feel.

Hold your pencil on its side - scratch, tap, swish, rub.

How many different marks can it make?

Step 3

What is inside the bag?

Have a guess before you look.

Try it on someone else.

Are their drawings different to yours?

Step 4

Make a ‘dictionary of marks’ to use when you are drawing.

Write down the object and then the mark you can make with it!

See how many different marks we can create with items found at home.

Drawing Sounds

Now, listen... What can you hear?

Draw to music – frantic, fast, gentle or dramatic.

Go outside and make a big drawing with crayons of all the sounds as they happen. Mysterious sounds are the best.

Ask yourself, what colour does a sound make?

Drawing Smells

Can we try drawing smells?!

Different flowers in the garden, or different foods or snacks we eat?

All Done!
