A German submarine patrols the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, manned by a crew that must contend with tense conflicts and long stretches of confined boredom.

Wolfgang Petersen’s breakthrough international hit “Das Boot,” a gripping, impressively detailed account of one harrowing voyage by a German U-boat during World War II, an enormous amount of work has gone into creating what the director considers his “ideal” third version of the picture; more than an hour of footage has been added, and the soundtrack has been completely revamped digitally, with stupendous results.

UK, 1981, 208 min., Dir. Wolfgang Petersen
