This documentary is an intimate portrait of Ralph Hotere, one of Aotearoa’s most respected artists

Considered to be one of New Zealand's greatest artists, Ralph Hotere (1931-2013, Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa) notoriously remained silent about his own work. In this documentary, Mita allows Hotere’s work to speak for him, while also offering her audiences an intimate view into an artist’s life and practice. With a score directed by Hirini Melbourne, commentary by Dr Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, Marilynn Webb, Pat Hanly and Albert Wendt, and poetry by Hotere's first wife Cilla McQueen, Mita’s documentary celebrates the profound depth of Hotere’s work.

NZ, 2001, Colour, 82 min. Rated M. Dir. Merata Mita
