The life of male protagonist from the 1970s to the near future and the myriad relationships that have criss-crossed its path along the way.
The Hummingbird, based on Sandro Veronesi’s bestselling novel (winner of the 2020 Strega
Prize), has been translated into 25 languages. Director Francesca Archibugi seems to delight in taking this epic, sweeping, long-form narrative and turning it into a deeply satisfying story spanning sixty years.
We follow Marco Carrera, his well-heeled family and his love story over three generations,
experiencing all the joys, wonders, pain, losses and changes that life brings. The journey from childhood through adulthood is fascinating, captivating and moving. At the centre of it is an extraordinary love story brimming with the heights and heartbreak of a romantic epic.
Pierfrancesco Favino as Marco is note-perfect as a flawed antihero with his capacity to stand life’s vicissitudes and continue trying. The ensemble cast is Italian Cinema’s A-list, and Archibugi holds this elegant family saga together with masterful direction through a non-linear structure.
The Hummingbird is an Italian-French co-production and opened the Rome Film Festival after
premiering in Toronto.
