The Italian director Mario Martone creates an expressive, economic depiction of crime and longing in this drama about a man coming home to Naples.
In Director Mario Martone’s, Nostalgia, Napoli is beautiful, dangerous, endlessly captivating
and much more than just a backdrop for this engrossing suspense. The rules of the outside world do not apply here, providing a gripping atmosphere.
Adapted from Ermanno Rea’s novel, the film draws us into ancient streets through a personal
story into a mysterious crime drama. Pierfrancesco Favino, one of Italy’s finest actors, plays Felice, a man returning to the city after thirty years to visit his ageing mother.
As he re-acquaints with his birth city, he finds himself drawn back into the mysteries and memories of what he left behind. It is much more than its title suggests, exploring the complexities of the past and the reliability of memory.
A very finely executed film with gorgeous cinematography and impeccable acting that will transport you. It is Italy’s entry to the Academy awards.
As a Neapolitan, I was stunned by the masterly evocation of the city’s atmosphere.
