New Zealand’s Whanganui River is the first river on earth to gain the same legal protections as an individual. The river’s Maori people, who have been fighting for the designation for 150 years.

The Whanganui River has been granted legal personhood, with the same rights and responsibilities as you and I. But determining where a river ends and the rest of nature begins - that may be up for some debate.
