As we prepare for a long weekend to recognise Waitangi Day, join us as we explore what it means to be tangata Tiriti.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the first immigration document of Aotearoa, enabling non-Māori to settle in this country. What does the treaty mean for you - Māori, pākehā, tauiwi? If one aspires to be tangata Tiriti, what does that look like?
To be a person of te Tiriti is to build a relationship with Māori, to understand the history of how this nation was formed and to commit to the ongoing fight for Māori self-sovereignty. It acknowledges that Aotearoa is a multicultural country, that Pākehā aren’t the only grouping brought together with Māori under the Treaty. How does this relationship building and understanding happen?
Be part of this discussion with Puna Wharehoka, kaiako te ao Māori Sacred Heart Girls College, and Parihaka resident; Margaret Smith, Taranaki Treaty educator; Hokipera Ruakere Papuni, Treaty educator and kaiako reo Māori and Luke Millard.
