Sphere

Taranaki Contemporary Dance Collective
  • Fri 9 Apr 2021
  • 6—7PM
  • Gallery 6, Len Lye Centre
  • Free
  • Refreshments provided

Sphere is a new production by the Taranaki Contemporary Dance Collective, bringing a fresh work to audiences - one that is inspired by and responding to, Len Lye’s Sky Snakes.

Sphere is a meeting between four dancing humans, Len Lye´s installation Sky Snakes and the audience. The Collective says that as dance artists they are naturally drawn towards Len Lye´s kinetic sculptures, feeling a close connection to his work.
In Sky Snakes they are inspired by the sound and sensation of movement, and the relationship between the mechanic and the organic human form.

The evening will begin with a performance of Sphere, followed by a short reading by spoken word artist Gaenor Brown. Afterwards enjoy an opportunity to meet the artists over refreshments and for an informal Q&A session.

'Sphere' explores the ebb and flow of relationships between the architecture of the performance space and the four dancers. These relationships, depicting both the deeply personal and humanly universal, connect us as witnesses - to each other and back to ourselves as we learn to fall, to trust, and eventually fly together as global storms rage around us. (Gaenor Brown)

About the Taranaki Contemporary Dance Collective:

Taranaki Contemporary Dance Collective is a group of professional dance artists formed in New Plymouth as a result of the Gallery’s The Art of Dance project, during and post- lockdown in 2020. With an innate need to move and express, the members recognised this and formed the collective in response.

The Collective aims to produce professional contemporary dance, working to create a base for their art form in Taranaki - in a local, regional, national and international context.

About the artists:
