The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, in partnership with the Len Lye Foundation and Pop-Up Poetry Taranaki, warmly invite you to celebrate the launch of Poems, a new collection of poetry by visionary multi-media artist Len Lye. Collected in a single volume for the first time, this lesser-known part of Lye’s practice will be performed by local poets with books available to purchase on the day.

About The Book

A selection of poetry and imaginative writings of Len Lye, who created remarkable sculptures, paintings and films. Less well known is the fact that he also produced a great deal of colourful and original writing. The book includes a detailed introduction by ROGER HORROCKS, Len Lye’s biographer.

About The Artist and Editor

An artist born in 1901 in Christchurch, Len Lye was one of the most important artists to have emerged from New Zealand. He created strikingly original work in film, sculpture and painting. Lye was a friend of many famous poets of his day, such as Dylan Thomas, Robert Graves and Gertrude Stein. This selection of his own poems and prose poems offers access to his fabulous imagination, his love of mythical imagery, his sensuous awareness of the natural world, and his whimsical sense of humour. Roger Horrocks is the author of Len Lye: A Biography, praised by many critics for its lively, intimate account of Lye’s life and work. His own collection of poetry, Song of the Ghost in the Machine, was a finalist in the 2016 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. Besides teaching poetry at the University of Auckland, Horrocks founded its Film and Media Studies programme.

Pop-Up Poetry is a group of budding local writers sharing their work and their inspirations. They learn from and challenge each other, develop their interest in poetry, and perform works in a friendly and supportive environment.
