Young Auckland artist Amanda Gruenwald produces hi-colour fluid abstractions that look like an earlier generation of ‘pour’ painting but are actually built-up in painstaking and ‘painterly’ brushed layers – harking back to pre-20th century modes and techniques.
Mid-generation New Zealand artist Jeena Shin has produced two site-specific wall paintings for the exhibition; continuing a long exploration of geometric abstraction and alternative surfaces for painting.
Brisbane-based Michael Zavros is a master of photorealist reproduction who engages with the double agency of his subjects and his own subjectivity: surface in the world of Zavros has everything to do with the fashion/commodity/sex connotation of the word. Nevertheless, they’re slyly appealing – as paintings.
