Mikala Dwyer: Earthcraft
6 Apr 2019 - Ongoing
Lower ramp
Commissioned for the grand space of the Gallery’s lower ramp, Mikala Dwyer’s sculptural installation greets visitors on their entrance into the building. Dwyer – one of Australia’s most acclaimed contemporary artists – is known for her installations that explore notions of time and space, creating strange scenarios that play in the spaces between reality and fiction. Curated by Sarah Wall.
Nicolás Paris: ko ngā herenga kei waenga i a tātou – lo que nos une – what connects us
6 Apr - 21 Jul 2019
Galleries 2, 3, 4
Colombian artist Nicolás Paris is the 2019 Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Aotearoa New Zealand artist in Residence. With an interest in architecture and a background in education, Paris’ project brings the outside environment inside, implanting ferns and lichens within the very fabric of the Gallery and the exhibition becomes a site of growth and learning, in constant transformation. Curated by Sarah Wall.
Projection Series #13: Suspended Agency, An Installation by Peter Wareing
6 Apr – 21 Jul 2019
Gallery 1
Shot and edited over the past three years in Dagenham – a London Borough which voted overwhelmingly for Brexit – this video installation follows a small cast of individuals occupying the margins of the city. Peter Wareing (NZ, UK) examines a distinctly modern condition: individual and collective passivity and numbness in the face of increasing political and economic insecurity. Curated by Mark Williams, Director of CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa New Zealand.
Open Window – Shannon Novak: Sub Rosa
6 Apr – 21 Jul
Queen St, hallway and bathrooms
The Open Window exhibition space continues with New Plymouth-born Shannon Novak’s Sub Rosa turning our attention to the secrecy and isolation of gay intimacy. Transforming the Gallery’s exterior window space into a historical scene of intimacy, Novak expands the moment with elements of fantasy, conflating the experience of secrecy and fear with the notions of openness and safety. Sub Rosa expands beyond the Open Window and Novak’s personal experience into the Gallery’s hallway and bathrooms to reflect upon the experiences of gay men in New Plymouth, both historical and present day. Curated by Paul Brobbel
Open Collection: He Rere Ke – Different Pathways
6 Apr - 21 Jul 2019
Upper ramp
The Open Collection series extends the Govett-Brewster’s Ministry of Education funded Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) programming. Taranaki art and art history educators and artists are invited to reach into the Govett-Brewster Collection to develop an exhibition that enables teaching and learning for secondary school students within a gallery context. Students can have close encounters with artworks important for the understanding of New Zealand contemporary art. Guest curator Gabrielle Belz has selected works to collectively generate a narrative leading to wider conversations about social interaction and understanding.
Len Lye: No Trouble
9 Feb - 21 Jul 2019
Gallery 5
This exhibition charts the early years of Lye’s career, observing his childhood in Aotearoa New Zealand and first steps as an artist in Wellington before an offshore departure that took the artist to Australia, Samoa and on to the United Kingdom. No Trouble demonstrates the range and depth of the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archive, showcasing recent acquisitions alongside many rarely exhibited documents and artworks. Curated by Paul Brobbel and Emma Glucina.
Len Lye: Art That Moves
6 Apr 2019 - Ongoing
Gallery 6
Art That Moves captures the essence of Lye’s tangible motion sculpture with a rotating selection of works from the Len Lye Foundation Collection. Audience favourites such as Universe and Blade perform alongside lesser known works such as Albatross and the never-before exhibited Pineal Flutter. Curated by Paul Brobbel and Emma Glucina.
