Double Harmonic: Len Lye & Tony Nicholls
The exhibition Double Harmonic pairs the pioneering kinetic sculpture of Len Lye (1901 - 1980) with contemporary work by the emerging New Plymouth-born artist Tony Nicholls.
The exhibition and subsequent publication explores the resonance of sound and movement composition across half a century. While Lye's work is often loud, the sound frequencies Nicholls employs are often so low as to be inaudible; their presence is manifested as motion. Lye's insight was to compose motion as one would compose music; Nicholls translates sound directly into vibratory, hallucinatory movement. Both are guaranteed to get viewers moving in sympathetic resonance.
