Take a tour of New Zealand’s contemporary art museum

The Len Lye Centre opened within the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in July 2015, and has rapidly become one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings. Wrapped in stainless steel, the building extends the contemporary art exhibitions and events that the Govett-Brewster has been renowned for since 1970.

Len Lye’s pioneering work with film can be discovered in the gallery’s purpose-built cinema and in exhibitions of his work from the Len Lye Foundation Collection and Archive. The exhibitions explore the breadth of Lye’s practice, from his motion sketches and myth paintings to his abstract experimental films and dancing kinetic sculptures.

It’s all set behind a striking stainless steel façade which has caught the attention of the world’s media, featuring in the likes of the New York Times, Chinese Vogue, The Telegraph and more.

The combined art museum offers a busy programme of exhibitions and events that span the art spectrum. It has a gift and design shop with exclusive Govett-Brewster and Len Lye merchandise and its smart onsite café – Monica’s Eatery – is one of the city’s best.
