About
Lunch time Leis is a free lei making workshop hosted by Otara-based artist and contemporary jeweller Faamele Etuale. Bring along a garment from a loved one to transform into a lei. During the drop-in workshop, participants will be shown how to cut up the garment and craft it into a lei to adorn their home or a photo of their loved one.
Faamele creates lei and contemporary jewellery to care for and honour people, including her late mother who inspires her approach to lei-making and teaching others. Alongside our current exhibition without centre, without limits, this workshop allows us to consider how we can retain and share memories in material objects and practices of adornment.
Faamele Etuale is an artist and contemporary jeweller whose passion stems from her formative practice as a painter. She holds a Bachelor in Creative Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery from Manukau Institute of Technology. She works across the mediums of painting, sculture, installation and contemporary jewellery. In her making-process she draws on pivotal moments in life and has consistently returned to adornment, in concept and form, as a structure that enables her to encase, reflect and release emotion.
