David Hatcher: Semantic Bliss

21 Apr - 22 Jul 2007

Investigating a range of cultural practices that combine abstract form with pure colour, David Hatcher’s inspirations for Semantic Bliss range from the history of modernism and abstraction through to the use of cuisenaire rods in Te Reo language teaching.

Acknowledging that meaning can only be achieved by group consensus – as defined by society, culture, religion or language – Hatcher has chosen abstract forms as they can be assigned different meanings in different contexts.

Curated by Mercedes Vicente

This exhibition features acrylic wall paintings as well as sculptures of pure colour blocks. Weekly Te Reo workshops will take place in the exhibition space using Hatcher’s blocks in the place of cuisenaire rods as teaching aids. Participants will construct their own narratives by assigning new meanings and configurations.
