Len Lye: Agiagiā

This exhibition focuses on the artist’s early work from the 1920s – including experimental film, kinetic sculpture, drawing and photography.
At the heart of Len Lye: Agiagiā is the first of Lye’s experimental films, Tusalava 1929, a fusion of the modern format of avant-garde cinema with the organic spirit of Lye’s oceanic home.
Works included illustrate Lye’s relationship with European modernism during his years living in the Pacific and the unique modernist voice he brought with him to London and eventually the United States.
Len Lye: Agiagiā, the publication, accompanies this exhibition. It includes images of works in the exhibition – sculpture, drawing, batik, photogram and photographs of Len Lye. It also has a foreword and essays by curators Paul Brobbel and James Pinker and an essay written by Andrew Clifford (Director of West Auckland regional gallery, Lopdell House Gallery).
