Open collection #1
10 Feb - 28 Mar 2016
The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is pleased to launch this new education initiative reflecting its commitment to developing young minds and new audiences.
Taranaki art and art history educators have been invited to reach into the Govett-Brewster Collection to develop and exhibition that enables teaching and learning experiences for secondary school students within a gallery context. Students can have close encounters with artworks important for understanding New Zealand contemporary art.
This first niche exhibition is curated by Leighton Upson who is head of the art department at Spotswood College and an independent researcher. The four paintings Upson selected – by Shane Cotton, Allan Harold, Tom Kreisler and Sir Toss Woollaston – are all landscapes that activate conversations about locality and identity in different ways.
Important paintings from the Govett-Brewster Collection by Colin McCahon are also on show in the mezzanine and ground floor galleries of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
The Open collection series extends the Govett-Brewster’s Ministry of Education funded Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) programming.
