Nicolás Paris: ko ngā herenga kei waenga i a tātou, lo que nos une, what connects us

06 Apr - 21 Jul 2019

Colombian artist Nicolás Paris transforms exhibition spaces into sites of experimentation and exchange. Curated by Sarah Wall, Kaitakatū Toi Hōu / Curator Contemporary Art

Artist Nicolás Paris brings together his architectural education and his teaching experience to incorporate elements of collaboration, dialogue and exchange in his work. The gallery serves as a platform for ephemeral, experimental learning experiences, including public conversations, workshops and events. Paris will alter and rearrange different elements of the exhibition to replicate and echo the flow of ideas that took place.

what connects us is presented not as a finished product or display but as a continuing process of growth and transformation.

Ko tā te ringa toi o Columbia mahi he whakawhiti i ngā takiwā whakaaturanga hei takiwā whakamātauranga, tohatoha hoki. Ehara a what connects us i te tāreitanga kua oti kē, erangi he mahinga whakapoupou i ngā tupuranga me ngā whanaketanga.

Paris conceives of the exhibition as a classroom, a place of learning where there are no teachers or students, only co-participants. In this classroom, we learn from those around us, not just people but all things, animate and inanimate. This requires us to be aware: to watch, listen and feel, to open our senses, to pay attention to our surroundings. As we move through the exhibition, subtle networks of relations and connections emerge, forcing us to think more broadly about our relationship to nature, and to each other.

E ai ki a Paris, he akomanga te whakaaturanga nei, he wāhi ako kāore hoki hōna kaiako, hōna tauira, erangi he hoa noa iho. Ka ako i te hunga e taiāwhio ana i a koe, kaua i te tangata anahe, erangi i ngā mea katoa ō-waho, ō-roto. Me mataara tātou, me āta rongo tātou ki ngā mea katoa. I a tātou e hipa ana i te whakaaturanga, he hononga ka hua ake, mea rawa ake ka hōhonu ake ngā haurongo ki te taiao, ki te tangata hoki.

In this spirit, the gallery becomes a platform for public conversations, workshops and events developed by the artist in close collaboration with the Education Team and curator. For details on the associated activities, please visit this website's event page, or pick up an information sheet in the gallery.
