Discover the stories behind New Plymouth’s vibrant street art and get ready to create your own mural project.

Take your ākonga on an inspiring tour of the striking murals at Huatoki Plaza. This hands-on experience introduces public art as a powerful tool for creativity, communication, and environmental awareness.

Students explore the techniques, themes, and messages woven into these artworks, discovering how street art reflects community values and sparks conversations about our environment. Through guided discussion and close observation, they’ll see how artists use colour, scale, and symbolism to share ideas in public spaces.

Then it’s time to create.

Working in groups, students design their own mural concept with an environmental focus. Next, we will head to the walkway near Len Lye’s Wind Wand to bring these concepts to life as bold chalk artworks—a fun, collaborative way to express creativity and care for te taiao.

A perfect lead-in to a mural project back at school.
