Inspire your NCEA Level 1 Art students with Lalaga Le Hui Fono – A unique art experience!

Looking for an inspiring and engaging way to deepen your students' understanding of contemporary Māori and Pasifika approaches to painting? Lalaga Le Hui Fono is a great opportunity for NCEA Level 1 Art students to explore a rich variety of painting styles and cultural practices, including:

  • Kōwhaiwhai, Tukutuku, and Whakairo inspired contemporary painting, showing how patterns and cultural symbols can be incorporated into contemporary artwork.
  • Abstraction and Expressionism: Contemporary Pasifika and Māori artists push the boundaries of painting, using abstraction and expressionism to convey powerful stories of identity, heritage, and connection.
  • Wharehoka Smith’s Kūreitanga II IV: A thought-provoking piece that challenges students to reflect on the intersection of toi Māori, architecture and taiao (natural environment) in contemporary contexts.

The exhibition also includes special connections to Parihaka, providing a rich cultural context that brings depth to students’ studies of social and political themes in art.

Hands-On Learning: Students can immediately apply their new insights by creating quick painting experiments in the studio, refining their skills and creativity. For those with extra time, a visit to Puke Ariki’s Te Takapou Whāriki gallery offers an excellent opportunity for observational drawing of taonga (treasures), further enriching the lesson.

This exhibition is a powerful resource for nurturing creativity, understanding cultural narratives, and exploring the dynamic fusion of tradition and modernity in Māori and Pasifika painting. Take your students on a journey of artistic discovery with Lalaga Le Hui Fono and deepen their connection to contemporary Māori and Pasifika art.
