Weaving Stories

Offer your students a hands-on opportunity to explore the art of weaving. Inspired by the  Lalaga Le Hui Fono find out how weaving brings people together. Learn how ‘ie tōga (Samoan fine mats) and kākahu (Māori cloaks) are woven from pandanus and harakeke (flax) and pingao (golden siege) then create unique woven artworks.

At school:

  • Preview the exhibition Lalaga Le Hui Fono
  • Find out about tikanga for harvesting harakeke
  • Compare natural and synthetic materials and fibres used for clothing
  • Practise weaving paper, try other materials, then bring together as a large class whāriki
  • Learn kupu associated with raranga
  • Design an artwork to increase awareness of an environmental issue for a nearby nature site
