About

E whai ana te kōrero, ka rangonahia e tātou, i tētehi wahine ingoa-kore, me tāna tūhura i ngā kōingo ā-roto me ngā moemoeā e pākaha ana i ngā kawa papori me ngā tikanga ā-ira. Ka tere tonu te kōrero, ā, ka tino whati haere, ka rite tonu te tuku i ngā mea auau e pāorooro ai te auahatanga o ngā mea hanga.

I hōna wā i whai hononga ki te wahinetanga, arā, ngā mea whakapaipai me ngā mea hira. E whakahau ana a Reihana i te kuititanga o te tāngata ki ngā whare whakapaipai makawe, arā, he wāhi harihari kōrero, he tauwhitinga ao, me ngā kōrero muna.

Drawing upon memories of growing up in her mother’s beauty salon, Lisa Reihana has converted 1970s hair dryers into ‘sound domes’, which encase us in an intimate narrative.

The story we hear loosely follows an unnamed woman as she explores inner desires and fantasies that rub up against social conventions and gendered norms. As the narrative progresses, it becomes increasingly fractured, and continuity gives way to repetition against a science-fiction-inspired soundscape.

Traditionally associated with the feminine, with pampering and small luxuries, Reihana proposes the salon as a site of public intimacy, a space to share gossip, inner worlds, and risky secrets.
