About
This work was commissioned for the exhibition 'Ten big paintings' at Auckland Art Gallery in 1971. Opportunities to work on large-scale canvases were rare at that time, hence this work is made of five interlocking canvases. The sections are each painted in a bold flat colour and when brought together, create sharp optical effects. 'Five part piece' is an example of a painting practice that approaches sculpture. This work uses minimalist style over a large area to act like a mural that operates in three dimensions. It is perhaps a precursor to the installation practice developed later in Don Driver's career and indicates his strong interest in colour.
