About

Rather than painting with a brush, here Gretchen Albrecht has poured paint onto the canvas. It has been absorbed into the unprimed canvas to produce veils of colour. Such works show the influence of American colour field painters of the 1960s, particularly Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler. Although her work appears abstract, Albrecht based her compositions at this time on studies of natural phenomena such as landforms, clouds, gardens, or the meeting of sea and sky.
