About
This carpet was created for the Bank of New Zealand Weaving Awards in the late-1970s at the Dowse Art Gallery, Te Awakairangi Lower Hutt. Coolahan’s work, like that of many other women artists at the time, was considered craft rather than art. Although Coolahan is primarily known as a printmaker and papermaker, this carpet demonstrates her technical innovation and process-driven approach to making. Tufted carpet no. 7 involves techniques such as hand tufting, cordage, and quilting at various scales to create textural variation. This approach can also be seen in her other works, where prints often incorporated multiple processes and materials to subvert easy categorisation.
